Never ask, on a general interest board, if people read poetry unless you’re wearing asbestos underclingies. ‘Cause dayum.
Still, in the interests of science, I persevere.
I’ve already learned that I’m snooty, incapable of coherence, trying to impress, and wasting everyone’s time. But then I knew that already!
So what are these people interested in?
I sometimes wonder because a lot of people I know work, eat, and watch TV and that’s about it.
But I was talking to a funeral-limousine driver today who told me that in in his spare time he enjoyed “off-road car racing” with his Suzuki.
I didn’t mention that in my spare time, I wrote poetry, but I began to wonder if I was missing out on something.
I asked it at a board where the general populace tends to be pretty well-read but not poetry readers. I was surprised at some of the vitriol, but in retrospect I shouldn’t have been. I am still surprised someone argued, and continues to argue, that “Ozymandias” doesn’t rhyme. Huh.
