Would you boo?

Last night, George W threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Braves/Nationals game. It was televised on ESPN and I had wandered away from the TV (not being big on ceremony, myself) and commented in the next room over that he was about to throw out the first pitch. As I was talking to Steve, I could still hear the TV, the boos from the crowd. We went back in and Steve used the TiVo to back up a few seconds.

I wouldn’t have booed. My reticence has nothing to do with my affection for Bush and everything to do with my affection for baseball. To me, that’s a pairing that I don’t want to distinguish with a reaction. Of course, I’m reacting now, but I never claimed to be consistent.

My husband said he would have booed, loud and long. I would have sat, silently, and looked forward to the real reason I was there. The game.

  1. I seem to remember when his father threw the first pitch at a game and didn’t even make it far enough to get to the catchers mitt! I am sorry I missed his son’s try at it!

    First time to your blog.

    Cheers!

  2. I was there and I didn’t boo. I stood silently and waited. Maybe boos carry better than cheers through electronic media, but it seemed about 50/50 from inside the stadium. Being a Braves fan, I did boo when Zimmerman hit the gaming winning home run in the bottom of the ninth.

  3. Honestly, I just don’t tend to be a booer. The only time at games that I boo is a really bad call or a really stupid argument.

So, I guess it’s no wonder that I wouldn’t have booed Bush!

That was an exciting game, Mike. I wish I had been there, only I would have been cheering Zimmerman’s homer. Don’t tell Howard.

  4. First, cheers carry far more than boos, particularly over the frequencies of broadcast television. High pitched piercing sounds easily drown out lower frequencies – think sirens.

Second, there are things far more important than baseball – like thousands of dead soldiers, tens of thousands of dead innocent Iraqis, putting off any action on climate and pollution problems and the ruination of this (and other) economies just so this clown and his posse can make some mega profits.

He deserves the boos. He’s worked very hard to get them. He should stick with his controlled crowds and fellow thieves and stay away from his victims. I don’t wish him any comfort from now until his time comes to me with his maker (the red one with the horns)

  5. I would get booed by me – opening day or anywhere. Quite frankly I wouldn’t want him at my team’s opening day. No apologies.
