I said I miss spring peepers, that would be
one reason to embrace returning east

despite the threat of snow, or ice. Oh, winter,
I thought I was rid of you for good

but your wind whistles in my mental eaves,
unmistakeable. I used to lie

in bed and count the chirps like the woods’ heart
beating like the winner of a race.
